Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.
Fast: All adults (those who have completed their 18th year of age) are bound by the law of fast up to the beginning of their 60th year. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices, are allowed.
Abstinence: All persons who have completed their 14th year of age are bound by the law of abstinence. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Parents with children who are minors not bound by the Laws of Fast and Abstinence should educate them in an authentic sense of Penance. When in doubt concerning fast or abstinence, please consult a parish priest or confessor.
