The Mass has been celebrated at St. Augusta since June 16, 1957. Eleven priests have celebrated Mass during its existence. Presently, our parish has 190 families consisting of 439 members.
Fr. John Woods |
In 1910 Mass was celebrated monthly in the Adolph Yott family home. In 1915 a former schoolhouse was purchased and converted into a small Catholic church and placed under the patronage of St. Agnes. Mass was celebrated every other weekend. St. Agnes closed, and the building was sold when the number of Catholic families declined. That building is now the Grange Hall. In 1940 Fr. John Woods, pastor of St. Theresa in Shelby, Indiana, held services in private homes and the public school.
In 1947, thanks to the generosity of Ray and Clare Churchill, the present church site was made available, and construction began. Mass was not celebrated here until June 16, 1957, when Fr. Charles Scholl, at the age of 70, became the first resident pastor. Much work was needed to renovate the church building and promote spiritual growth.
